Commissioner Overseeing Police, Fire Departments In Rye Resigns

A popular Rye commissioner who oversaw the city's police and fire departments has resigned.

It's unclear why Michael C. Corcoran Jr. suddenly stepped down.

Rye Police Lt. Robert Falk has been named interim commissioner. Neither Falk nor Corcoran could be reached for comment.

In 2015, Corcoran joined the Rye Police Department after a 25-year law enforcement career in West Orange, N.J., including service as deputy police chief.

On Feb. 1, 2016, Corcoran became Rye's first commissioner, overseeing both the city police and fire departments, as reported here.

The former commissioner prided himself on being accessible to the news media, sometimes holding impromptu press conferences at crime or accident scenes and issuing detailed police reports. He also was a frequent public speaker.

Corcoran’s duties included overseeing paid and volunteer firefighters after the fire department received warnings from the state labor department’s Public Employee and Safety Health Bureau.

Rye's city manager, Marcus Serrano, who appointed Corcoran, also could not bee reached for comment on Thursday, June 28.
